A quick Aloe

Started potting up some Aloe-Vera today . Now I have to decide where I'm going to plant them. It'll be a couple of months until they have rooted properly so I have some time to decide.

Actually, looking around my garden I see lots of spare plants , some natives others not. I can see a lot of people will have the opinion that only natives should be planted , but I think that not every situation calls for a native . Exotics make wonderful displays , especially the trees in autumn .

It may just be me , but it seems that in the last couple of years there seems to be less bees around . I don't think I would of had much in the way of a tomato crop last year had it not been for my paint brush ! So with that in mind I'm keen to plant a lot of flowers .

Not too far away from my house I recently saw a bee keeper burning his hives  , I suppose the  Varoa mite had taken hold and that was the best course of action ,an expensive solution.

Thinking of ways to get publicity so that people know that there are a few radical highly dangerous gardeners out here who have a trowel and are not afraid to use it !! Anything big costs money..for example , turning a round about into a garden would take a lot of plants ....but I think that something should be done soon , I have a vision of people donating plants and seeds but i need to give them a reason to .

Watch this space.

Dogs 015 This is Archie at 3 months , he could fit in the palm of my hand, and I had just spent a frantic 5 minutes looking for him , only to discover him sleeping in the shade.

He's now 3 and loves helping in the garden , his main job seems to be guarding the compost pile  , peeing on the lemon tree , and scaring birds . He earns his keep .

Winter start for an action plan

A quick google shows me that the idea of Guerilla Gardening hasn't really taken off here in New Zealand, so I thought I might try to galvanise a few people .

I see this as a way to build communities and neighbourhoods, a few people can make a difference.

The basic idea is to find disused land and plant it out. A nice flower garden can cheer a lot of people , but in these days of increasing food prices , a veg garden or some fruit trees would be more welcome in some suburbs.08guerrilla-600

Heres a good place to start, there's not too many people signed up from NZ. I'm just north of Auckland and will try to organise a group up here first. Hopefully the idea will spread , I'd particularly like it to spill over to south Auckland , I believe it is less interesting to tag when there are flowers around , and who knows , maybe gardening will become the new substitute for social disobedience !!

Reasons to be cheerful

It should remain fun and interesting , a good way to meet your neighbours and make new friends. I really like the idea of seed swapping or giving away cuttings , setting up community worm farms , teaching kids about compost...maybe some of our older folk will pass on some of those skills we seem to be loosing , preserving springs to mind .

The Big Goodbye

I'll try and build a data base and help organise things, suggestions always welcome.
